Miracle in the Mosel: A Thrilling Vintage from a Legendary Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm ’22
Mosel Riesling is one of the most distinctive, graceful and transparent wines on the planet. Joh. Jos. Prüm stands tall as one of its most eloquent interpreters, so it is always a joy to present their range—and 2022 is a fabulous vintage for this historic estate. From Kabinett to Goldkap, the wines are vibrant and pure, with fabulous energy and superb depth and intensity. The higher Prädikats offer exquisite layers of fruit to go with their sparkling acidities. “We are so happy!” Katharina Prüm told us when we visited late last year. Although the season was challenging, with a very warm and dry summer, the team worked hard to produce perfectly balanced wines. They allowed more shade in the canopy and limited yields even more than usual to relieve vine stress and encourage even ripeness. They got some help from mother nature, with cooler, wetter weather in September that relieved hydric stress and allowed for the development of botrytis, leading to extraordinary sweet wines at the higher Prädikat levels. And, crucially, they picked each parcel at just the right time. The way the vintage played out—with superb wines the result—tells us plenty about how the changing climate often favours quality in the coolest parts of northern Europe, especially when a thoughtful, dedicated grower is involved.

Generosity was never going to be an issue in an early vintage like this (harvest began on 19th September, one of the earliest starts to a Prüm harvest), but what is surprising is the freshness and overall balance. The wines are already open and deliciously flattering, yet they have the energy to go with the fruit, plus the stuffing and balance to age very well. In most cases, they will outlive us all! Importantly, every single wine speaks vividly of its vineyard and its level. Prüm lovers will be very, very happy.

Where the 2019s and 2021s need a few more years to hit their straps, Prüm’s 2022 Kabinetts are already shining. As usual, the power builds from Bernkastel to Graach to Wehlen. Each shows the majesty of this vintage in their own way. Given the reviews below, we probably don’t need to say more. Overall, the wines are wonderfully fresh and balanced. Although they will mostly be drunk young, they will also improve for five to 10 years, and 20 years will not weary them. They could effortlessly stand up to a broad range of flavours: sashimi, lighter Asian dishes and tuna tartare, for example. But any seafood or white meat, and of course, they make beautiful aperitifs.

At this level, the Prüm wines are still light in body, but the flavour intensity and depth of character go up markedly, and the 2022s deliver a mesmerising balance between elegance, freshness, racy fruit and slate-like minerality. There is considerably more depth of fruit here than in the Kabinett-level wines, although not necessarily more overt sweetness. Instead, it is a question of more flesh, more power and, therefore, wines that can stand up to richer food. Katharina Prüm believes this category is the most versatile at the table. We agree.

Again, as the notes below attest, 2022 is a stunning vintage for Prüm’s Spätlese. These wines are already thrilling to taste but will continue gaining depth and complexity for decades. “Overall, I think 2022 is a Spätlese vintage for us,” says Katharina Prüm. “I was really taken aback by how all wines remained so fresh and with good acidity despite the heat of the vintage. In this sense, 2022 reminds us of 2020. Both vintages are drinking very well young, even if they can also keep for decades, of course.”

The step up here is one of power rather than just sweetness. Riper and more intense is a more accurate way of describing what’s happening. The style remains pure and ultra-fine, and while the Spätlese wines revel in juicy intensity, this bracket offers more power, flesh, complexity and length.

Balance is key to understanding the quality of Prüm’s 2022 Auslesen. These wines can sometimes be tricky to understand fully when young—not so for the 2022s; they already have the wow factor. Again, there is a big step up in intensity, and the difference between the vineyards shines through even more.

With such finesse, delicacy and digestibility, these wines are typically too delicate for sweet desserts (although they can work with light, fruit-based dishes that are not overly sweet). Match them with whatever works for you, but don’t forget that this level can work very well with savoury food, matching superbly to pork, game birds, savoury tarts, roast chicken, ceviche, sausage, and venison. They are also brilliant with almost all Japanese and Chinese dishes and terrific with a wide range of cheeses. Spice and fruit-based sauces do not worry them!

“While 2021 played into the hands of the elegant house style, the 2022 wines show the Prüms’ mastery of the genre because every wine is defined by elegance and notable restraint in residual sweetness. Two thousand and twenty-two is as poised as ever, already present and exquisitely aromatic.” Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous

“The Joh. Jos. Prüm Estate produced a superb collection of fruity-styled wines in 2022, which all shine through their subtle and filigreed elegance.” Mosel Fine Wines

“With the rise of so many excellent winemakers in the region, one might have supposed that J.J. Prüm, with its profound conservatism, might have been overtaken and left behind. Not a bit of it. The Estate remains where it has been for decades: at the summit.” Stephen Brook, The Wines of Germany

“No matter what kind of mood you are in, the world always seems a better place with a glass of Prüm in hand; these are gracious, charming, wines that go straight for the heart leaving you only with the desire to finish the bottle quickly, resolving to finish a second bottle more slowly and reflectively.” Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate
