Domaine Gueguen

“Precise, fresh and focused Chablis” from the fine 2022 vintage
Domaine Gueguen

“There is a huge amount to look forward to in Chablis 2022. Prices remain relatively sensible and this is clearly a fine vintage. I place it ahead of 2015 – 2016 – 2017 – 2018 – 2019 and 2021. The fight is on for supremacy between 2020 and 2022!” Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The oracle of all things Burgundy, Jasper Morris MW, has made some exciting assertions about 2022 Chablis. In ranking it ahead of recent classics like 2017 and 2019—and even pitching its potential to surpass the great 2020—he’s set expectations rightly sky-high. For those that got it right, the wines are ripe with crisp tension and signature mineral salinity. Domaine Gueguen got it right. We’ve been saying for years that this is a maker on the rise, and these 2022s demonstrate just how far it’s come.

Céline Brocard and her husband, Frédéric Gueguen, are generational talents in the Chablis region. Céline’s family traces its winegrowing history back to the 16th century, while her husband has over 20 years’ experience with prestigious growers like Domaine Durup and Domaine Brocard. Years of tending their vines and soils with scrupulous care and relentless energy have paid off with organic certification, lifting their wines to another level of purity and expression. They own 25 hectares of prime real estate across the Chablis region and source fruit from a further 11 hectares of vines farmed to similarly high standards. Yields from the vines (average age 35 years) are kept low, with crops rarely exceeding 50 hl/ha.

Gueguen’s light-touch precision in the cellar teases out the terroir, placing it centre stage, free from winemaking distortion. Recently, they have invested in a few stainless-steel eggs to mature their Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines—allowing them to build weight and richness without needing barrels. All is right at Domaine Gueguen.

When we spoke with Céline about the 2022 wines, her delight was evident: “It was a very, very good vintage. We’re thrilled with the results,” she told us. And, considering the still very fair pricing of these wines, there’s more than just the quality to delight in.
