Tesseron

A Stellar Range of Artisanal, Farm-to-Bottle Cognac
Tesseron

“These [Cognacs] not only excite spirit experts, they also appeal to wine drinkers due to their complexity, subtlety and depth of flavour.”Max Allen, The Australian

In a story that mimics that of the top grower-producers in Champagne (vs. the Grandes Marques houses), the remarkable quality and distinctive, vinous style of Tesseron’s predominantly XO Cognacs have allowed this artisanal producer to carve out a niche among the giants of Cognac.

In some ways, you could think of Tesseron as an Egly-Ouriet or Agrapart of the Cognac world. Like the top growers of Champagne, the rise of this producer has nothing to do with advertising or traditional marketing and everything to do with a perfectionist’s eye for quality.

It has certainly helped that the Tesseron family holds one of the largest collections of ancient Cognacs in their legendary 13th-century Paradis cellars—once part of the local Abbey. In fact, before they started releasing small batches of Cognac under their own label (in 2003), the Tesseron family had been a highly reputed supplier of XO Cognacs to the large houses for over a century.

Max Allen’s quote above points to Tesseron’s reputation as the wine lover’s cognac. First and foremost, the Tesseron family are brilliant grape growers and proprietors of the progressive Fifth Growth, Château Pontet-Canet in Pauillac. They previously owned Château Lafon-Rochet in Saint-Estèphe, which was sold at the end of 2021. Then there are the spirits themselves, expertly distilled and aged in-house, which offer the complexity of a great, fully mature wine with velvety depth and ethereal finesse.

Cognac Tesseron Composition

Composition is this producer’s first non-XO release, yet even here Tesseron have aimed to make something very special for its level. It pours a bright, light amber colour and offers aromatics of spiced autumn fruit, white flowers and fresh plum, while on the palate there is that classic Tesseron texture and vinous, fruity complexity—ensuring this Cognac’s sipping credentials. Important to note that there is no added colour, it is the older material in this blend that brings the hue and depth. At the bar, we have found the spirit mixes beautifully, adding finesse and lift to a wide range of stirred and shaken drinks. This makes sense, Tesseron told us that they had comprehensively tested the Composition in a number of classic cocktails before the final blend was signed off. It’s an exceptional and versatile example of Cognac at an exciting new price point.

Cognac Tesseron Carafe Passion

Aged for an average of 15 years, with at least 10 years maturing in Limousin oak barrels, this elegant, ethereal XO is a blend of Cognacs from the Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne and Fins Bois areas. Roughly thirty elements in total (made entirely from Ugni Blanc) were selected specifically for their graceful and floral qualities.

The Passion blend leaps out of the glass with a vinous, fruity bouquet that then leads to a palate of flowing texture with flavours of preserved citrus, vanilla, figs and complex spices. A wonderfully hedonistic and complex Cognac.

Cognac Tesseron Carafe Tresor

The pinnacle of the new collection, Trésor was crafted from a blend of around 100 eaux-de-vie, each selected for their finesse, depth, richness and length. This rarefied blend of spirits was then aged for more than two generations (50+ years) in special barrels famed for their age and rarity, called tierçons, within the Tesseron family's Paradis cellar (where the most valuable Cognacs are kept). Of course these eaux-de-vie are all Grande Champagne in origin, and all three major grape varieties (Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Folle Blanche) are represented. This ensures the Trésor is comprised of only best and most complex raw materials available.

It's a sublimely opulent Cognac with intense rancio notes (smoky/nutty characters) that as Albert Tesseron says, "you never find in Cognacs less than two generations old". More viscous and dense in the mouth than the Légende, it's still remarkably sophisticated and (indescribably) complex, with prodigious length on the finish. Each sip fills the mouth with perfume. Sheer indulgence.

With an average age of over ten years, this is made from Cognac’s three terroirs: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne and Fins Bois. The Ovation’s distinctive character comes from long aging in Limousin oak barrels, which adds fullness, spice and sweetness. The pure aroma offers up ripe pears, spiced apples, maple syrup and vanilla. The palate is silky smooth, with perfectly integrated spirit and a mouth-coating texture. A very fine Cognac and a superb XO for the money.

Cognac Tesseron Lot 29 XO Exception

The original jewel of the Tesseron collection is a unique blend of legendary Grande Champagne Cognacs, including some of the family’s finest, oldest and rarest stocks. From distillations begun in the 1920s, and even a proportion of the blend from 1905 and 1906, it is a very rare Cognac that has been lovingly aged for three generations. It also includes some Colombard and Folle Blanche—extreme rarities today. To us, this is as good a Cognac as most are ever likely to taste. You can get older and rarer, yet this will never suffer by comparison.

Cognac Tesseron Masterblend 88's

The oldest reserves of the Tesseron family’s Grande Champagne lie nestled in their 13th century Paradis cellars that were once part of the local abbey. This special limited-edition Cognac derives from eight demijohns—25 litre heavy glass flagons—marked “1898”. Cognacs are traditionally transferred from barrel to demijohn after 75 years and the aging process continues, albeit at a very slow rate.

The demijohns that have gifted the world this remarkable Cognac were not from a single base, but rather a blend of 88 Grand Champagne Cognacs that were presumably put to demijohns from barrel in 1898. The blends would have included Ugni Blanc, Colombard and Folle Blanche along with many other grape varieties that were planted and flourished pre-phylloxera and the formation of the AOC. Only 286 bottles of this singular treasure were produced.

Cognac Tesseron Masterblend 100's

Master Blend 100's is a selection of the very finest Grande Champagne blends in the Tesseron cellar, Cognacs that were put aside by the company's founder, Abel Tesseron, in the second half of the 19th century. What you will find in this bottle comes from 4 demijohns—25 litre heavy glass flagons that preserve old Cognac eaux-de-vies and have attained optimum maturity. The lot year on these demijohns is 1865. For what it's worth, a single bottle of vintage 1858 Cognac Croizet Cuvee Leonie sold at a Shanghai auction in 2011 for $157,000!

As for the Masterblend 100, this Cognac would have been distilled from many grape varieties that were planted and flourished pre phylloxera. Certainly Ugni Blanc, Colombard and Folle Blanche, but others as well. Sadly, there are no records to preserve the precise origins of the wine predistillation, save the 1865 tag. Only 143 bottles were produced of this window into a bygone era.

Cognac Tesseron Tres Vieux Extreme Noir 1750MI

This unique bottling is a blend of Cognacs coming from ten demijohns dated from 1853-1906. So all of the Cognacs in the blend are well over 100 years old and almost all of the blend comes from the 19th century (making it considerably older  than the most famous, big brand prestige cuvées like Louis XIII or Richard Hennessy). In fact, the Extreme looks like a downright bargain when compared to such wines (in both quality and price terms).

Unbelievably velvety and supple on the palate, the Extreme's exceptional mellowness is matched only by its infinite depth and rancio complexity, the result of some 70-80 years aging in oak casks and then decades more in glass demijohns. It seems to float across the palate and opens up in waves of countless secondary aromas, which grow in the mouth, and then end in a soft, exceptionally long and fresh finish. The bottle, a 1.75 litre demijohn, is a smaller replica of those from which it was sourced. It is a quite an extraordinary and unique Cognac. Only 300 of these beauties were ever produced—for the world— and there are not many left. We have received three.

This is a limited release cognac which is blended from minute quantities of Grand Champagne demi-johns sourced from youngest 1905 Cognac to oldest 1865 Cognac with portions that date to before phylloxera…This is the 'ultimate' Cognac for Tesseron. This Cognac is slated as one of the 'oldest' Cognacs on the market today. Bright, burnt umber colour. Muted aromas, almost a musty sweetness like an old butterscotch biscuit tin, but more complexity, lifted mixed peel, light rancio, mellow woody notes. Seductive. Sniff, repeat. Sniff.
