Lambert Nebbiolo

Something Beautiful: Luke’s Most Exciting Nebbiolo Yet
Lambert Nebbiolo
“We’ve had excellent years before,” Luke Lambert recalls, “but in 2022, we also had excellent farming.” Lambert is referring to the Denton family’s evolving viticultural practice—which includes under-vine cultivation, the elimination of herbicides, organic principles, and almost exclusively dry-farming. Luke believes the evolution is now resulting in some of the healthiest soils in the Valley. And Denton’s progress is playing out in the glass. Luke credits the progression as producing more primary aromas and flavours early in the piece, so his wine is slower to unfurl in the glass and develop in the bottle. If any was needed, proof that excellent farming can take a great wine to a whole other level.

Lambert’s assertion that the 2022 Nebbiolo is the best release he and partner Rosalind Hall have made is not hyperbole (and for what it is worth, we totally agree with him!). He explains that 2022 delivered an outstanding growing season for Nebbiolo. Long hang times and cool, moderate conditions—so critical to the ripening of Nebbiolo—paved the way for excellent flavour and tannin development. The final piece of the puzzle is this searching grower’s 20 years of sharpening his method with this fickle variety, fine-tuning practices in the vineyard and cellar, and working with a broad clonal mix to find their Nebbiolo sweet spot. And in 2022, Luke and Rosalind have nailed it.

“As well as making excellent chardonnay, shiraz (labelled syrah because of its cooler-climate style) and rosé under his eponymous label, [Luke Lambert] is one of this country’s foremost producers of nebbiolo…” Max Allen, The Financial Review
