Bérêche and Mouzon Leroux

Ode to the Montagne: Champagne from Two Unmissable Growers
Bérêche and Mouzon Leroux

“Without a doubt, two of the most interesting grower-producers in Champagne today,” writes our own Robert Walters, author of Bursting Bubbles. “Bérêche is simply a benchmark, making wines of profound depth and complexity, while Sebastian Mouzon is a rising star whose wines are now gracing the lists of many of the world’s best restaurants (with good reason!).” That ringing endorsement signals an offer brimming with quality and originality. As someone who, quite literally, wrote the book on the elite growers, Rob’s advocacy for Mouzon Leroux and Bérêche should leave you with no doubt: if you are a fan of great Champagne, these are two producers that need to be on your radar.

Both hail from Montagne de Reims, ground zero for great Pinot Noir and home to some of Champagne’s most famous Grand Cru villages (Bouzy, Ambonnay), producers (Egly-Ouriet) and wines. That said, Mouzon and Bérêche champion the less famous, more northern and eastern reaches of the Montagne. Sebastien Mouzon farms just eight hectares of vines in Verzy, a Grand Cru village with three hills and valleys and, importantly, a mostly north-facing exposition, meaning Mouzon’s wines possess tighter structure and more precision than usually associated with the Montagne. The Bérêche brothers work primarily to the west of Verzy, in the north of the region near Reims. They are famed for their deeply cast, profoundly complex wines, which are “among the very best readers will come across”, according to Antonio Galloni.

Below, we offer a selection of Pinot-dominant cuvées, sourced chiefly from small plots of meticulously farmed vines in the Montagne. We have included the rosé from each producer—a criminally underrated Champagne style, more glaringly so when you see wines this good. Alongside, we have the L’atavique from Mouzon―a vibrant and vinous Champagne of great presence―and Bérêche’s Brut Reserve, knockout quality at a fabulous price.

The best growers are in a league of their own; it sometimes seems like they are mining lightning from the chalk. We shine a light on these two singular, exceptional interpretations of Montagne de Reims because our IFW clients deserve to experience that rare thrill from these future Champagne legends.

“Brothers Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche have made the family domaine, which dates back to 1847, into one of Champagne’s bright lights with an emphasis on organic and biodynamic farming and structure-building winemaking that leads to wines of power and substance held together by fine balance.” Rajat Parr and Jordan Mackay, The Sommeliers Atlas of Taste

“Of the hugely impressive range of Mouzon-Leroux champagnes, two stand-outs are the L’Atavique Tradition and the L’Incandescent Rosé de Saignée.” Max Allen, Financial Review
