Albino Rocca 2022

“Exceptionally High Quality” Barbaresco
Albino Rocca 2022

“The exceptionally high quality of the Barbarescos here is no longer news, as the wines have been superb for many years… If this were a younger and more fashionable estate, Albino Rocca would be a darling of wine lovers and sommeliers alike, the sort of buzzy estate everyone talks about. The Barbarescos in particular are certainly deserving of that sort of attention.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Reading Galloni’s words, it’s hard not to think of Angelo Rocca, who passed away suddenly in 2012. In his final years, he had already begun to reconsider the stylistic path briefly explored at the estate. Like many of his contemporaries, he engaged with the modern wave that swept through Piemonte in the late twentieth century, before gently guiding Albino Rocca back toward a more classical expression of Barbaresco—wines of clarity, proportion and quiet authority.

Today, his daughters—Daniela, Paola and Monica—have fully realised that vision. The estate feels both grounded and renewed, where tradition serves as a compass rather than a constraint. Large oak botti remain central, with wooden fermenters and longer macerations now playing an increasing role.

Under Paola Rocca, working alongside her partner and long-time cellar master Carlo Castellano, the wines have reached an especially compelling place. As Daniela notes, “the expression, elegance and purity have all been heightened.” This progress is mirrored in the vineyards, where the family continues to adapt thoughtfully to a changing climate.
The 2022 Barbarescos are a superb reflection of this work. A dry season (just 400mm of rain) and an early harvest—completed by September 29—have yielded wines of striking balance and aromatic lift. There is generosity, but also finesse and beautifully judged tannins that will appeal to traditionalists. They will reward cellaring, yet are already immensely appealing. It’s telling that Galloni himself reportedly left with bottles for his own cellar.

The supporting cast is equally impressive. From the cooler, later 2024 vintage (harvest finished October 14), the entry-level wines bring freshness, energy and vivid perfume—wines that speak clearly of place while continuing to offer compelling value.

Albino Rocca Langhe Nebbiolo Rosso di Rocca 2024

Rosso di Rocca is 97% Nebbiolo with a smattering of Cabernet Franc. The Nebbiolo hails from a vineyard at Magliano Alfieri in the first hills of the Roero region. The vines were planted in 1967 and 2002, and the family purchased the parcel in 2016. The Cabernet Franc comes from 20-year-old Estate vines in Barbaresco. Roero’s sandy soils give a lighter, brighter, earlier-drinking wine than the Rocca Nebbiolo d’Alba. The wine’s upbringing (solely in tank) and early bottling help keep to this theme.

Albino Rocca Dolcetto d'Alba 2024

Albino Rocca’s Dolcetto d’Alba comes from four sources. Mature vines in Barbaresco and San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, southeast of Alba, have always been part of the mix. New parcels in Nieve and Treiso now make this Dolcetto a true picture of Barbaresco region. The Barbaresco vines were planted in 1960 and 1978. Thanks to their maturity and sensible yields, this wine displays more intensity and texture than many a garden-variety Dolcetto d’Alba.

The Barbera is drawn from three parcels. The first vineyard is the esteemed Ronchi Cru. Then, a parcel of vines planted in 2004 in the sandstone-rich soils of San Rocco Seno d'Elvio—just outside the Alba township, on the edge of the Barbaresco area. More recently, a parcel of 20-year-old Barbera from Castagnito, on the opposite side of the Tanaro River, has joined the party.

Albino Rocca Nebbiolo d'Alba 2024

Like most Rocca wines, the Nebbiolo d’Alba comes from a single vineyard—a parcel between Barolo and Barbaresco in the westernmost section of the Seno d'Elvio subzone. Aptly, this area is known locally as Terra di Mezzo: Middle Earth. Here, the Nebbiolo vines range from 15 to 60 years old. The Rocca family matured this wine for eight months in large Austrian and German oak casks.

In addition to its classic source—a parcel of old vines in Meruzzano—Rocca’s Barbaresco now takes in a selection of young-vine fruit from Albino Rocca Barbaresco Crus, including Cottà and Ronchi. These impressive sources, and meticulous winemaking—three weeks on skins and maturation exclusively in large, low-impact oak botti for 20 months—result in a benchmark wine for this level.

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Montersino 2022

The Montersino Cru lies at the southern tip of Barbaresco, close to Treiso, at 320 metres above sea level. The Roccas’ 0.42-hectare parcel perches at Barbaresco's highest and coolest area. Angelo Rocca planted the south-facing vines in 1998 on very poor clay and limestone slopes with thin layers of sandstone. The sandstone brings finesse, as does the altitude. Daniela Rocca highlights that this soil type (locally called Formazione di Lequio) resembles Barolo’s Monforte and parts of Serralunga.

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Cottà 2022

One of the great Crus of Neive, Cottà was among the first sites in Barbaresco to be produced as a single vineyard wine. The Roccas work with two small parcels totalling half a hectare. The first parcel is adjacent to their Gepin (Barbera) site and faces the Ronchi vineyard. The second plot sits in the highest section of the Cru. Cottà’s sand-rich clay/marl soils and warmer microclimate grow generous yet fine wines that marry beautifully with Rocca’s elegant interpretation of Nebbiolo. In 2022, it was the only single-vineyard Barbaresco both vinified and aged in oak.

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ovello Vigna Loreto 2022

Barbaresco’s Ovello Cru spans a ridge with both slopes planted to vines. Within this large Cru are several delimited parcels (historical plots, if you like). Rocca’s Vigna Loreto is one of them, a tiny plot that is effectively a monopole. Vines here are around 55 years old, and Rocca first vinified the parcel as a separate bottling in 1990. Sitting on the sunnier, south-west side of the ridge, the nearby Tanaro River provides moderating influence. This results in cooler nights than the ridge’s twin side. The clay and limestone soils are also sandier and lighter than in the rest of Ovello, giving the wines here far more finesse. On the other hand, vines from Loreto must be cropped at 10 hl/ha less than other Ovello vines if the wine is bottled under the parcel name, so this wine balances its finesse with real density.

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi 2022

This celebrated, limestone-rich Barbaresco Cru runs along the southern belt of the appellation, near the town itself. The Rocca cellars sit just above this southeast-facing vineyard—leading the site to become synonymous with Albino Rocca. Ronchi is also the oldest and largest holding of the Estate. It extends almost six hectares (three of which are Nebbiolo) and comprises roughly a third of the total Cru area. Rocca’s Nebbiolo vines are between 50 and 75 years old, offering an ideal combination of vine age, southeast exposure and deep clay-limestone soils. Ronchi consistently produces some of Barbaresco’s greatest wines: wildly aromatic, rich in complexity and structure.

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Angelo 2020

This producer has been through an incredible journey in recent years. The sudden passing of the family patriarch, Angelo Rocca, in 2012 was obviously the catalyst. Angelo was already moving the Estate back to a more classic style (having come full circle), and after his passing, his three daughters decided to produce a wine in his honour. Speaking with their grandfather Albino Rocca (Angelo’s father and founder of the Estate), the Rocca sisters formulated the idea of making a wine in the way it had been done back in Albino’s day.

Angelo is a small blend of fruit from selected parcels across the Estate. The grapes spent up to 50 days on skins (using a submerged cap) in a large-format, specially designed wooden Stockinger fermenter. The wine was then aged for 24 months in a single 2,000-litre cask. The blend is typically 50% Ronchi, 25% Ovello and 25% Montersino, and ages for two years in bottle before release. It has been described by Galloni as a “Brunate of Barbaresco,” which gives you some insight into the quality and style of the wine.

Albino Rocca Moscato d'Asti 2024

Rocca’s Moscato d’Asti comes from a very steep, south-facing ‘Sorì’ vineyard in Meruzzano (San Rocco Seno d'Elvio). The oldest vines date back to 1950; due to the incline, all the work is done by hand. The mature vines and limestone-rich soil here combine to give a wine of tremendous energy and freshness yet with really lifted and intense aromatics. Not all Moscato are created equal!
