This Pinot Noir is a blend of four North Canterbury vineyards: the northernmost site on the Omihi Saddle and 'Top Block' (part of the "Golden Mile" on Blacks Ave, Waipara), both on Omihi clay; Three Sisters Vineyard on Mackenzies Rd, Waipara, on Rangitata gravels; and the Porters family vineyard, also on Mackenzies Rd, planted in 2004 on Domett clay.

The fruit was hand-picked and fermented with natural vineyard yeasts in open-top fermenters, with 25% whole bunch. It was aged for 12 months in French barrels (20% new), then rested in stainless steel on light lees for a further 6 months. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

In the glass: Deep crimson. The nose is deep and brooding, with plum and blue fruits and lifted floral, spicy notes. The palate is full-bodied, with ripe, rich fruit, a mouth-filling texture and round, plush tannins that give weight and power. It lingers to a savoury, moreish finish.

Reviews

"The 2024 Pinot Noir North Canterbury has a surprisingly intense color for a variety that's normally pale. Bright, primary fruit reminiscent of blackcurrant wine gums, plums and strawberries meets vanilla oak and festive spices derived from 12-18 months in French oak. Seamless, well-handled tannins provide texture and sinew. The finish is fragrant with medium length. Unadulterated and pure with minimal handling, this is a young, vibrant offering that you could approach now, but will develop extra layers of aromatic interest with bottle age."
90 points, Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous
