Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 1966

Reviews

“A dry summer with low yields led to a general declaration. The centre is mid-garnet in colour, yielding to a tawny rim. It's not all that expressive on the nose: rich, ripe and open but not singing from the glass. There's lovely liquorice and dark chocolate fruit on the palate, still very fresh and with good tannic grip mid-palate, leading on to a powerful, spicy finish. This is holding up really well.” 96 points,

“Lively mid ruby with a pale rosy rim. Much more concentrated and vigorous than the 1955 tasted immediately beforehand. Even a little briary. Firm. Very neat and lifted on the palate with that great roundness of the 1966 and just a hint of tannic structure. Hint of woodsmoke – or is that the open fire in the grate next door? Spirit well incorporated. Still lots of life ahead of it. Very gentle.” 19/20

“Medium red. Ineffable perfume of strawberry, mocha, coffee and burnished wood and Cuban cigar tobacco tones, lifted by a floral topnote. Wonderfully thick, even viscous, but with terrific acid cut accentuating the wine's inner-mouth aromatic character. The combination of layered texture and energy is captivating. Finishes with great subtle persistence, late-arriving tannins and a mounting smoky quality. Fabulous now but this is still evolving and should go on for another few decades.” 96+ points
