Quinta do Noval

Single Estate Port from a Douro Icon

Quinta do Noval is an astonishing wine estate, with a rare combination of deep history and innovation. Founded in 1715, it has changed hands just twice over 300 years. The most important thing to understand about Quinta do Noval is, that unlike the other famous names in the world of Port, Noval is a single estate, a single vineyard, a producer that controls every step of production from vine to bottle. The much larger Port houses buy most of their fruit and therefore cannot control the viticulture (except at any Quintas they own). They also make wine in far larger volumes which, as we know, has its cons.

The 150 hectares of mostly high-altitude, high-density vineyards are predominantly on unforgiving schist rock, producing very low yields of the best fruit imaginable. Controlling every aspect of the vineyard work is an obvious advantage for Noval, while the attention to detail in the cellar is second to none. In another demonstration of their commitment to local ground, Noval was the first Port producer to move their entire winery and warehousing to the Douro Valley, centralising production among the hillside vineyards rather than downstream at the quays of Vila Nova de Gaia with the rest of the Port community

“Nacional is the Everest, to be sure, but Noval offers a Himalaya's worth of quality in other Ports as well,” Kim Marcus, Wine Spectator

These factors come through loud and clear in the wines themselves, from the Vintage Ports through to the outstanding and much-underrated Tawnies, and the stunning Colheitas. There is also a very strict selection process each year.

Quinta do Noval was a pioneer of the Late Bottled Vintage category when they bottled their first LBV in 1958. Right from the early days, Noval chose to treat this wine like their Vintage Port before aging: focussing on using only great-quality, estate-grown grapes, trodden by foot. And unlike the prevailing norm where heavy-handed filtration strips out so much, Noval bottles their LBV without filtration. The result is a considerably richer style that shares some of the depth and intensity of Noval’s own vintage port.

Jancis Robinson has written that “Noval ports in general have stood out in comparisons of ports below vintage port level,”. This is certainly the case with Noval’s Tawnies, where rigorous selection and impeccable aging produce a pyramid of fascinating and delicious wines rooted in finesse, purity and intricacy. Even the entry-level wine is given the Rolls Royce treatment and tastes a thousand miles away from the more common and manipulated ‘boot tawny’ made with lighter fruit (and sometimes diluted with white Port). Along with its fortified brethren, Madeira and Sherry, these complex, multifaceted and invigorating wines remain some of the greatest values in the world of wine.

In an interesting sidebar reflecting Quinta do Noval’s standing in the world of wine and beyond, US President Barack Obama was possibly the first person to receive an allocation of 2008 Quinta do Noval Vintage when he was presented with a single bottle by Portuguese President Cavaco Silva at the 2008 NATO summit (2008 being the year when the ex-US President took office). In return, President Cavaco Silva received a copy of the very first treaty signed between Portugal and the United States—you work out who got the best gift!

The Portuguese word colheita means ‘harvest’. A Colheita Port must be from a single year and aged for a minimum of seven years in wood before bottling. In practice many are aged for considerably longer (as is the case at Noval) and so Colheita Ports can vary greatly in style.Noval’s Colheita is only made in exceptional years, when certain lots of wine with great aging potential are set aside to be aged in cascos (old casks with a capacity of 640 litres). When Noval feels the wine is ready—usually after about 15 years—a portion is bottled for release. The rest of the stocks will continue to age in barrel for bottlings in the future. The 1997 presents as lithe and muscular, with laser-focused drive and pinpoint acidity, matched to a svelte palate branded with beautiful flavours of spice, and a walnut and coffee cake finish that lasts an age.

“Looks like a very mature red Rhône. Smells not unlike a mature Châteauneuf from a very ripe vintage! Seems less alcoholic and less sweet than many in this fortified wine tasting. Nice balance. Quite delicate. Would go well with cheese but perhaps not sweet enough for most desserts – though there is a Christmas pudding element to its very attractive flavour.”

“If you’re a fan of vintage dated Tawnies (aka Colheita Ports), they don’t come much better than this. It’s endearingly, palate-stimulatingly spicy, with real intensity and focus, an impression of heat and figgy intensity, a faint undertone of spirit and a finish that lingers on the palate for minutes. The wine is drier than many examples, with the structure that is the hallmark of Noval’s wood-aged Ports.”

Noval’s 40-year-old is made in tiny quantities and shows the heights this style of wine can reach with careful, extended oak aging. Noval’s aged Tawnies are bottled to order, which guarantees their freshness—even at this age the wine is zesty and full of life. Precise and focused on the palate, and with exceptional length, this is a true masterpiece to compare with the greatest wines of the region.

“Terrific stature and visceral intensity. Tightly wound acidity, a touch of volatile acidity and Cognac-like spirit drive to the kaleidoscopic palate, unleashing a never-ending panoply of flavours: black cardamom, spicy fruit chutney, salty praline, mocha, dried mango, marmalade and walnut. Ultra-long, well-focused and resonating.”

“This is very flattering up front, with a lush wave of warm date, fig and toffee leading the way, backed by subtle bitter almond and Brazil nut notes that add spine and contrast. A flash of green tea pierces the finish, adding a dry hint in turn and bringing you back for more. A wine with power that is also invigorating to drink.”

“Made from old vines and blended from casks of Port averaging 40 years of maturity, this is a rare treat with which to finish an evening. The color is tawny brown, with a light orange-amber rim and mahogany center. Fully developed aromas of cinnamon, cedar, nutmeg, vanilla, dried apricots and hazelnuts lead to layered, rich, sweet and creamy flavors and a long, long finish. Drink or hold.”

Quinta do Noval Tawny 50 Year Old NV

Launched in October 2024, Quinta do Noval’s 50 Year Old Tawny Port joins a small list of wines from producers taking up the new category, which was formally introduced in January 2022. This extraordinary wine was crafted from estate-grown fruit grown in the Vale de Mendiz. It is a traditional multi-varietal field blend of Touriga Nacional, Sousão, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Francesa, among others. After decades of aging in oak barrels, during which time a very high proportion will have evaporated, this remarkable wine has acquired a complex intensity of flavours and austere purity that take Noval Tawny Port to an even higher level.

“Nuanced, deep nose, at once broody and elegant, with dried rose petals, cedar and toasted walnuts against a backdrop of plum and sweet spice. Impressive focus and definition on the palate with perfectly etched flavours of dried cranberry, dried fig, red apple and pomegranate molasses over an earthy layer of shiitake mushrooms, tobacco leaf and seaweed. Long and linear, with poised honeyed unctuosity on the mid palate and a beautiful tannic structure lined with Earl Grey and bergamot. Tingling cardamom, nutmeg and honey-glazed almonds linger on the finish.”

Quinta do Noval LBV Unfiltered 2018

Not all Late Bottled Vintage is created equal. Quinta do Noval pioneered this category when it bottled its first LBV in 1958. Right from the early days, Noval chose to treat this wine exactly like its Vintage Port before aging: focusing on using only great-quality, estate-grown grapes trodden by foot. And unlike the prevailing norm where heavy-handed filtration strips out so much, Noval bottles its LBV without filtration. The result is a considerably richer style that shares some of the depth and intensity of Noval’s VP. Like the Vintage Port, the grapes are stomped in lagares (the traditional stone vats of the Quinta), then macerate during a three-day fermentation to obtain the best possible extraction of the polyphenolic compounds. From a terrific year for this grower’s Ports, it is a rich and complex wine with gorgeous notes of wild berries and blackcurrant fruit alongside hints of dried peel and Christmas spice. True to form, it’s polished and refined with admirable poise, complexity and a twist of quality dark chocolate and sweet tobacco on the lingering finish. The newly released 2018 carries on this wine’s proud tradition of fine, structured tannins, great freshness and purity of fruit.

Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port 2022

The most revered and collectible Port in the world, Quinta do Noval Nacional is a Vintage Port produced from a single 2.5-hectare parcel of ungrafted vines in the Quinta do Noval estate, right next to the cellars. This patch of vines consistently produces a sublime and unique wine widely considered to be the pinnacle of Vintage Port and indeed, one of the world's great wines. It is also almost certainly the rarest of the world's great wines as so little is released—and then, only in suitable years. The Nacional plot is not named after the grape Touriga Nacional (as is commonly assumed). In fact, the site is planted with a range of the best Port varieties, including Touriga Nacional (which accounts for only about 30%), Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão (about 20%, 60-year-old vines), Tinta Roriz and some Sousão. The average age of the vines is around 50 years. The wine is called Nacional because it is produced exclusively from ungrafted vines on their original rootstocks and, therefore, directly ‘attached to the soil of the nation’. The yields of these vines are minuscule (around 15 hl/ha), and the tight bunches of small, deeply coloured grapes produce a massively profound, yet typically sublimely refined, Port of rare finesse. The Romanée-Conti of Ports if you like.

“This has a broader, deeper bouquet than the regular Noval fortified black plum and liquorice, blueberry and Christmas cake, all delivered with fabulous delineation and freshness. The palate is stunning: lovely balance and tangible intensity, yet it is so light-footed and gentle in terms of grip. It has a spicier, more peppery finish than the Quinta do Noval, and it's very long on the finish. This is a Naçional that will age gracefully over decades. Drink 2032 – 2075.”

“With only 2,400 bottles made for the world, this is one of the rarest Ports, produced from a small plot of vines 100 years old and older growing on their own roots in a section of the Noval estate. Such finesse and elegance at first, then power and structure as the wine fills the palate with blackberry syrup, creme de cassis and cocoa. Long, lacy finish lasts for minutes. Best from 2037.”

"Even better than the impressive 2021 Nacional, this is a magnificent Port. It comes from a small parcel of ungrafted vines on the Noval estate. Beautifully perfumed, ripe with sweetness balancing the massive structure, the wine is set to age for decades. It is a Port to treasure. Drink at the earliest from 2035."

With a vibrancy that defies its years, this beauty still has a long way to go (if desired).

“Wonderfully complex with elegant bright red fruits and lovely lively spiciness. Lively and fresh with real complexity, this is expressive and precise.”

IN THE PRESS

“One of the most iconic Port wine estates in the Douro” Richard Mayson

“‘It’s my favourite, it always will be and always have been…’ Quinta do Noval has a ‘genteel quality and accessibility’, offers Wadsack, ‘other ports are more stand up and arrogant and English, for better expression, but this producer is owned by French and has a subtlety’.”
Vintage Port Masterclass with Joe Wadsack, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

“The last time I saw Noval's age-indicated tawnies, I was very impressed. Nothing has changed my mind. These are among my favorites—concentrated, classic and focused.”
