This comes from a tiny 0.28-hectare parcel of 50+-year-old vines in the clos itself (see the note above on the white for more details on this terroir). The planting density of this parcel is now 20,000 vines per hectare. The vines are not trimmed but wrapped together (tressage), and they yield tiny berries with very little juice. Vinified with 60% whole bunches—bringing oodles of perfume, structure and tapering finish—this is another wonderful Santenay. How many red Burgundies of this standard are offered at this price these days?

Domaine Hubert Lamy Santenay 1er Cru Clos des Gravières Vieilles Vignes 2021

Reviews

“The 2021 Santenay 1er Cru Clos des Gravières (Rouge) delivers aromas of raspberries, baking spices, rose petals and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, supple and perfumed, Lamy produced only one barrel of this suave, refined cuvée.”
91 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
“A warm area that matures very fast – it’s steep, with hard limestone here. 55-year-old vines and starting with some high-density too. Larger – what a perfumed, great, nose – yes! Clean, pure direct – the crystalline equivalent of some of the whites. Wide finishing. Simply a great wine!”
