Biodynamic. This cuvée is not only a truly memorable expression of Riesling, but it is also simply one of the great white wines of France. It’s crafted from five plots of 60-plus-year-old vines at the heart of the Schlossberg slope, where the sun exposure and granitic, mineral-rich soils beget a particularly deep, layered and profound dry Riesling.

The wine takes its name from the day of Sainte Catherine, which falls on the 25th of November. Early vintages of the wine were picked on or around that date, drawing their opulence and complexity from Alsace’s late autumn. Today, it can be picked as much as one month earlier. However, it remains the most extraordinary dry Riesling of the domaine.

Reviews

“A giant dry riesling that is so cool, focused and precise, it comes across as only medium-bodied in spite of the enormous concentration of citrus fruit, spice and wet stone minerality. Very pristine finish with a wonderful silkiness that doesn’t want to let you go. This took a whole year to ferment, and that clearly worked extremely well.”
98 points, Stuart Pigott, Jamessuckling.com
“The most subtle hint of orange blossom is all the nose wants to reveal. More temperature reveals an overtone of pineapple juice. A tiny ficker of smoky reduction appears, too. The palate is bold, clean-cut, serene and scented. This is the crystalline nature of granite making itself known. The pithy texture makes the mouth water even more. The aroma and the texture of freshly zested Amalfi lemon are on the long finish. This has body but no fat - a gorgeous synthesis of freshness and citrus, long and elegant. Real drive and much energy.”

“With the Grand Cru Schlossberg Cuvée Ste-Catherine in my glass, for a moment I become lost in the memories of earlier vintages poured in this room… then we taste back through some of those earlier vintages, and I find the wines acquire a filigree with age, which makes their beauty seem timeless.”
