Barthod has a 0.86-hectare parcel of vines here, averaging almost 70 years of age. The thin, rocky topsoil and high altitude of Les Cras combine to produce one of Barthod’s deepest and most mineral wines, while the sunbathed south-facing exposure ensures full ripeness and plenty of fruit. The vines are planted chiefly on shallow white soil (just 30cm before the roots hit the rock) compared to this vineyard's deeper, redder soils as you move north toward Les Fuées. Ghislaine rightly compares the intensity and minerality of Les Cras to Grand Cru Bonnes Mares.

Les Cras is always something special from this address, and the 2023 is a knockout. Fleshy and deep, yet with the mineral complexity, structure and class associated with the site. It should live for decades.

They face south-south-east, Christophe more east-south-east. The Barthod 2023 Chambolle Cras has a full fresh purple colour, crisp berry fruit on the nose, which opens out very well on the palate. Generous, yet with controlled precision of dark berry fruit. Very promising.”
