Les Charmes is essentially a continuation of Les Amoureuses, which should make it a case of “enough said.” It’s a site that, again, highlights the layered idiosyncrasies of Burgundy’s terroirs. The soil is very thin and stony on the lower-lying slope, with the bedrock just 50-60cm below the surface. Yet higher up, on the part of the terroir that borders Chatelots, the soil has a deeper, more clay-rich profile, bringing more depth and power. Ghislaine Barthod blends from one very rocky parcel right next to the Les Amoureuses border, and another from the deeper soils. So we get the best of both worlds. Both plots have old vines (averaging 70 years old) and only make up a quarter of a hectare, hence the wine is extremely rare.

Reviews

“The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru requires a few swirls of the glass to get going, revealing hints of raspberry, rooibos and bay leaf on the nose. The aromatics feel very harmonious. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid entry, very cohesive and poised, yet there is both weight and transparency here. Very elegant and poised on the finish, this is a classy Chambolle-Musigny that will put on more weight during the second winter in barrel.”
93-95 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
