Fruit for the 2023 Skins Chardonnay came from a block at the bottom of the cooler northeastern slope of Denton View Hill vineyard. Denton is a unique site in the Yarra, shaped like a cone―giving it a variety of aspects and exposure― with soils loaded with hard granite boulders. Winemaker Kirilly Gordon used Mendoza and Gingin clones in 2023, so there’s no shortage of punchy flavour to go with the grippy structure. The grapes were picked when flavour and phenolic ripeness peaked late in the season, and the bunches were destemmed before fermentation on skins. After two months, the wine was pressed to seasoned barriques for maturation.
