The Vieilles Vignes comes from a selection of the oldest vines in the Clos, mostly planted in 1910 and situated mid-slope, right in the heart of the vineyard. A minimum 70 years of age is the threshold here, from only the best plots. Many of these ancient vines yield only a few bunches of grapes per vine and this fruit produces a Clos de Vougeot of unique intensity, breadth of flavour, complexity and structural power. There are also a few Pinot Beurot (Gris) vines interplanted in these parcels and these grapes are harvested and vinified with the Pinot Noir. Fermented with 50% bunches and raised in 50% new oak, the Vieilles Vignes is a deeper, more powerful wine than the Classique.

Château de la Tour Grand Cru Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes 2021

Reviews

“There's no cuvée Hommage this year, so the fruit of the domaine's oldest vines all went into the 2021 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes, a full-bodied, supple and velvety wine evocative of dark berries, sweet spices, peonies, orange rind and vine smoke. Seamless and layered, with impressive concentration and length, this is built to age with grace.”
93-96 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
Five-star wine “A slightly richer purple colour than the classic cuvée. The nose is a little bit more discreet, just a question of backwardness, because there is clearly more weight. A massive burst of deep raspberry fruit, less sucrosity and far more power at the finish. The tannins are enveloped by the fruit and the stems only show in the white pepper. Very persistent. Drink from 2028-2040.”
94-96 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a lively bouquet with loamy scents filtering through the red berry fruit, fragrant with rose petal and peony emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with firmer and more solid tannins than the Cuvée Classique, fleshier with a liquorice-tinged finish. This is a couple of steps ahead of the Cuvée Classique and should give 15 to 20 years' drinking pleasure.”
92-94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
