Les Santenots is one of Volnay’s top 1er Cru sites. The clay-rich soils produce wines of perfumed depth and good structure. To give some idea of the quality, we asked Leroux many years ago if there were one vineyard in Volnay he would particularly like to work with. Without hesitation, he replied Santenots, mentioning that he buys the wine of this vineyard every year from his friend Dominique Lafon, and loves it. Of course, he then went on to speak about Caillerets (the village’s most revered site—that he first made under his own label in 2011). His Santenots dream only came true when Leroux finally got access to this vineyard in 2018—a one hectare plot of 70-year-old, Estate-owned vines in the lieu-dit Les Plures. This was one of the first vineyards to be picked in 2023, and 40% of bunches were used in the ferment. Referring to the iron notes that the clay from this vineyard gives, Leroux calls his Santenots a “full on” reflection of Volnay saying “This is Santenots to me. This persona. This grip.”

Reviews

“A profound deep purple, with a significant depth of fruit as well. Clearly a good decision to have picked this early as it is fully ripe without being compromised. A little alpine strawberry, with balanced tannins and good length.”
91-94 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“Ben first made this wine as a white in 2018 and said, "It was like sitting between two chairs. You're not really comfortable." It's been transitioned into Pinot Noir, even if it is still harvested when Chardonnay is harvested here—it's very early ripening. It's been brilliant every time I've tasted it since the transition. Deep in color, crispy in tannins and perky in acidity, it's all wound up structurally. There's 40% whole cluster here, and it takes a minute before it unleashes in the glass.”
95 points, Christy Canterbury MW, Tim Atkin Burgundy Report
