To give some idea of the quality, we asked Leroux many years ago if there was one vineyard in Volnay he would particularly like to work with. Without hesitation, he replied Santenots, mentioning that he buys the wine of this vineyard every year from his friend Dominique Lafon, and loves it. Of course, he then went on to speak about Caillerets (the village’s most revered site—that he first made under his own label in 2011). His Santenots dream only came true when Leroux finally got access to this vineyard in 2018, and now owns a one-hectare plot of 70-year-old, Estate-owned vines in the lieu-dit Les Plures. Made with 40% whole-bunch, this is a fine yet intense Volnay that is a real keeper. If you drink or serve it young, please give it a good decant, otherwise it will really start to pop after 10 years.

Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots 2024

Reviews

“Ben felt comfortable in using a third whole bunches here. Great looking grapes from just 15 hl/ha, he tells me. Tiny bunches. A healthy ruby purple. The bouquet has a very sensual, even velvety red fruit, with a fresh burst of white pepper. This works absolutely beautifully, with the stems adding grip without drying Drink from 2030.”

“The 2024 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru contains one-third whole bunch. This feels a little earthy on the nose and does not quite have the brightness and delineation of the best examples this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, just a little pepperiness from the stems but I appreciate the cohesion on the finish here.”
90-92 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
