One of the signature cuvées of the Leroux stable, Clos de la Cave des Ducs is a 0.64-hectare monopole owned by the family of Leroux’s right-hand man, Jean-Charles Carré. It’s a wine that was rarely seen before Leroux started bottling this wine in 2007. It’s Volnay’s highest 1er Cru and has fine, light soils that typically produce wines of great delicacy. The vines are up to 80 years old (an average age of 50 years) and include some 20-year-old mass-selection vines from Comte Armand’s Clos des Epeneaux. The site is managed biodynamically and with meticulous care—Carré and Leroux test their most progressive viticulture here. Always very floral on the nose (Leroux speaks of geranium), this has loads of sweet, red fruits, some anise and again more depth and structure than typical. Will be special with age.

Reviews

“Mid purple. A delicious perfume on the nose, some ripe raspberry alongside the cherry notes of the vintage. Just a little dry patch in the middle before the fruit returns behind, in a more persistent finish. Drink from 2029-2034.”
89-92 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“The 2024 Volnay Clos de la Cave des Ducs 1er Cru has a more earthy nose than the Mitans, with touches of potpourri and limestone scents. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grainy tannins, more floral in style, gentle grip with a touch of allspice and brown spices lining the finish. Quite distinctive, this will give up to 15 years' drinking pleasure.”
91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
