Natural cork. Due to its small size (at 6.6 hectares Clos Saint-Denis is about one-third of the size of Clos de la Roche) and fragmented ownership, this is one of the Côte d’Or’s least-tasted Grand Cru vineyards. For a number of years, Leroux has been making an outstanding example from a tiny, 0.13-hectare parcel of vines which were planted in 1962, smack-bang in middle of the original clos. These vines have always been managed organically. As per last year, the fruit was mostly destemmed, and the wine was aged in one-third new barrels. Leroux often refers to this Grand Cru as “mon chouchou”, which means teacher’s pet or favourite.

Reviews

“Medium deep crimson. One third whole bunch. Very lively fresh raspberry and alpine strawberry on nose and palate. This is a charming and accessible Clos St-Denis, not so dense as some, but it builds well to the back of the palate. Fine and delicious finish.”
92-95 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“Leroux's Clos St-Denis is tremendous wine. Although there is a bit of reduction on the initial attack, it opens on the palate with savoury, salty notes that almost recall roast meat and a deep plummy fruit character with an earthy edge. It is surprisingly structured for the vintage, with firm tannins, fresh acidity, and admirable density of fruit that all lead to an impressive finish. It is produced from a 0.15-hectare parcel in the heart of the walls of the lieu-dit Clos St-Denis.”
95 points, Charles Curtis MW, Decanter
