Eldridge

Eldridge (formerly Eldridge Estate) is a producer with a proud history that has now been fully revitalized under the winemaking of Steve Flamstead and the new ownership of Elli and Vicki Tutungi. The wines are made in tiny quantities, exclusively from three hectares of Estate vines. The winemaking is spearheaded by the legend who is Steve Flamsteed (the newly anointed 2027 Halliday Wine Companion Winemaker of the Year!) with Grace Jiranek, a self confessed Pinot and Chardonnay fanatic as his right arm. Grace has worked for a range of top producers in the Adelaide Hills and Mornington as well as Jean-Marc Pillot in Chassagne-Montrachet.

The Eldridge vines sit on the slopes of Red Hill in Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula and, at 225 metres, this is among the highest-altitude vineyards in the region. First planted by David Lloyd in 1984 across 3 hectares (8 acres), the north-facing vineyard slopes 45 metres down to a spring-fed dam, sheltered from harsh winds and cooled by ocean breezes for a long, slow ripening period. The volcanic red clay soils hold water so well that the vineyard is entirely dry-grown.

The vision for Eldridge today is clearly defined: outstanding Estate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gamay (which we'll get in subsequent vintages). The new era has begun with a bang, and the wines are some of the most exciting we've tasted from the Mornington.

Eldridge Pinot Noir 2023

This elegant Pinot comes from one of the oldest sites in the region. "We've gone for perfume. 2023 is a perfumed wine anyway, but we're going for a perfumed style," says winemaker Steve Flamsteed. Various parcels were fermented either destemmed or as whole bunches — 50% whole bunch in the final blend — with wild yeast and 10% new oak. Fruit is sourced exclusively from the Eldridge site, from a blend of MV6, Pommard 5, 114, 777, G5V15 and 115 clones. Bottled late January 2024. Just 200 dozen produced.

“Whole bunch gives lift but this wine is ultra strawberries in the truest sense of the word, in that it’s fresh strawberry rather than strawberry syrup. Smoked herbs, stones, hay and earth notes encase the whole, and compellingly so. There is so much elegance here but such an array too. This is beautiful. Slippery, twiggy, ripe, fresh, undergrowthy, a brand new box and a brand new dice.”

“Stylish new sage-green labels are the first obvious difference and the heavy bottles close to 1.6kg when full. That’s less impressive, but everything else is impressive, thanks to Steve Flamsteed leading the team. He’s a craftsman with pinot noir and chardonnay so all the good things are in this: dark cherries, fragrant forest-floor aromas, pomegranate and blood orange with woodsy spices. Fuller bodied but not weighty, as there’s a refinement here, fine tannins, too, with raspberry acidity making it feel vibrant and, yes, still very youthful. It’ll garner more complexity in time, but it’s moreish and hard to resist now.”
96 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion
“Deep-ish purple-red colour, fresh and youthful; the aromas are fresh and clean, bright red fruits, red cherry, raspberry, Turkish delight, laced with herbs and there are sarsaparilla and ruby grapefruit notes on palate, where the tannins are gently firm and upright, suggesting it will be improved, softened and complexed by a little cellar time. Purity of fruit shines through.”

Eldridge Chardonnay 2023

The 2023 Chardonnay is a compelling expression of cool-climate Mornington Peninsula fruit, combining the site’s naturally high acidity with impressive flavour, texture and length. Hand-picked, wild ferment, 100% malo. All parcels were whole-bunch pressed and wild-fermented on full-juice solids in puncheons (25% new oak) before undergoing 100% malolactic fermentation and 10 months' maturation. Coarse filtered only. Bottled late December 2023 from a blend of Penfolds 58, 95, I10V5, 548, 96 and 76 clones. Just 190 dozen produced.

“So much flavour, texture and length. Excellent intensity upfront but it quickly spreads and expands and runs. Bacon, grilled perach, citrus and savoury, salty inputs. Such a powerful wine and such a neat one at the same time. Fantastic chardonnay. Bang and you’re away. 95, tempted for 96.”

“All the different parcels of chardonnay come together as one, whole-bunch pressed, fermented wild on full juice solids. It went through mlf and is aged in Mercurey puncheons, 25% new. It has latent power; now, it’s a bit nervy, sparking with electrifying acidity. It’s very good. Savoury, a little funky, with layers of nutty, creamy lees, grapefruit/lemon juice and zest. The oak is integrated superbly, and while there’s plenty of flavour, this is tightly wound and will be relaxed by the time it hits the market.”

“Light-medium straw-yellow hue with a wheatmeal, smoky charcuterie and creamy lees bouquet. The wine is reserved and delicate in the mouth, with almond/nougat traces and a light feel, just fading a little at the finish. Very young and will probably fill out a bit with more time in the bottle.”
