This new wine from Exopto embodies one of the most exciting white wines we have tasted from Spain. Period. It comes from a vineyard of the same name, a tiny plot of 80-year-old Malvasía Riojana rooted in the limestone soils of San Vicente de la Sonsierra (pictured below). To preserve what Tom calls, “the mineral and citric character that this variety can develop in limestone soils of Rioja Alta”, it spent two weeks on skins and fermented with indigenous yeasts in a 950-litre concrete egg, where it also matured for one year before bottling.

Reviews

“The 2020 El Bernate is the third vintage of a single-vineyard white from a 0.5-hectare 85-year-old plot of Malvasía Riojana (Alarije) but maybe some others too in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The wine is austere and fresh and has gained in depth and nuance. It's 13% alcohol and has a pH of 3.33 and 6.3 grams of acidity, very good parameters. It's light to medium-bodied and finishes dry and very clean with a chalky sensation.”
93 points, Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate
"Tom Puyaubert's delightful white combines Viura with 20% Malvasía and Garnacha Blanca from two vineyards in Ábalos and San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Floral and appealing, it has racy acidity, the concentration of low yields, a hint of oak spice and flavours of pear, lemon and quince."
92 points, Tim Atkin, 2021 Rioja Report
