The first release of the Elenay Shiraz in 2011 was the result of what Andrew Thomas calls a beautiful accident. A few barrels initially destined for the premium Kiss Shiraz didn’t quite fit the style and were blended with a few barrels of Sweetwater Shiraz to form the Elenay Shiraz. Such was the enthusiasm for the wine that Thomas decided to continue with the label, each year selecting barrels from his myriad Shiraz parcels to create a unique Hunter Valley expression. The vineyard composition changes depending on the vintage, but the style remains the same, with premium French oak playing an important part, especially in its youth.

The 2021 vintage blends the newer barrels from the Kiss Vineyard (50%) and the Sweetwater Vineyard (50%). The highly praised Sweetwater Vineyard is located at Sweetwater Ridge in the northern Belford sub-region of the Lower Hunter Valley. The vines were planted in 1998 on soils of red/brown loam over limestone, giving a distinctive floral lift to its wines. Before Thomas made the blend, both components were aged in a mix of new, one, two and three-year-old French hogsheads for 15 months of maturation.

Showcasing this winemaker’s love of purity, it’s a deep, floral, spice-scented Shiraz that sits at the fuller end of the medium body spectrum. Its silky texture, bold flavour, and impressive length tell us it will evolve beautifully over the coming years. If drinking soon, simply decant and serve with a rich braise.

Reviews

“Smells serious. Layers of oak spice, elegant, balancing on savoury and sweet. Violets and cherry blossoms, plums and blackberries. Velvety rose petals. The texture is velvety too with fine building tannins and a bitter fold right after subtle, succulent sweetness. Fresh black pepper spice comes at the end and tingles in the front palate. Very elegant expression that will cellar well and merge all the nuances smoothly with more time.”
94+ points, Kasia Sobiesiak, The Wine Front
“A very complex shiraz with sweet green tobacco, green olives and plums on both the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit, fine tannins and bright acidity. Vivid and focused. Very Cote-Rotie inspired here. Fine and vivid. Drink or hold.”
94 points, James Suckling, jamessuckling.com
“Deep ruby with a bright purple tint. Mulberry, pepper, and lavender aromas. Medium to full in weight but there’s a lightness of fruit that makes it very appealing. Blue and red berries mix with exotic spices and a hint of darker minerality and wakame notes. A lot going on yet already flows with a seamless nature. Tannins are up to the task and will ensure many good cellaring years are ahead. Drink 2023–2038.”

“A blend of Kiss and Sweetwater Shiraz taken from selected barrels of each wine, and matured in French hogsheads (35% new). Excellent colour, with a savoury/spicy edge to the fruit. Its palate drives the core of the wine, with purple and black fruits before a return of some savoury notes to the finish. Decades of life for a very high-quality wine. Aspires to and achieves elegance.”
