As always, this is 100% Meunier from a single 40+-year-old, south-facing vineyard in Vrigny, a commune on the Petite Montagne de Reims next to Gueux, where Jérôme Prévost is based. Straight Meunier remains a relative rarity in Champagne; in Egly’s hands, it is something unique. Low yields, old vines and ripe fruit make this one of the most intense, layered and opulent Meunier wines kicking around. Bottled without filtration, the dosage was a tiny 2 g/L. Taking in three great vintages for this grower, this is as exciting a Vrigny as you could hope for: layered, fleshy and spicy—remarkably hedonistic for Meunier yet with wonderful brightness and saline freshness. It’s an exceptional rendition of this cuvée, as you would expect from the vintages involved.

Reviews

“Issuing from four parcels planted with Pinot Meunier in 1970 and vinified entirely in tank, Egly's latest release of the NV Les Vignes de Vrigny is based on the 2020 vintage and incorporates 50% reserve wines (from 2019 and 2018). Offering up an expressive bouquet of pear, rye bread and red cherry, it is medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and fruit-forward, with ripe but racy acidity and an expansive finish. It was disgorged with one gram per liter dosage.”
