In total, the wine spent 23 days on skins before being pressed to French oak (20% new) for eight months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. This is obviously much deeper and more luscious than the entry level wine, and immanently drinkable now. Expect layers of fleshy Pinot fruit, suggesting rose petal, plum and earth, balanced by fine, powdery tannins and a long complex finish that perfumes the mouth with sour cherries and sappy freshness. Again, really very smart.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0648/2575/3828/files/c4463537-2f11-ed11-ab3d-024d026f405e_16476-750.png?v=1693019761
toolangi-pinot-noir-2022
Toolangi Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022

This year marks Kaspar Hermann’s fifth vintage as Toolangi’s chief winemaker, and under Hermann’s site-first approach—allowing the place and vintage to dictate the result rather than forcing a particular style—the true character and quality of Toolangi’s vineyard are starting to reveal itself.

At Toolangi, 2022 will be remembered for two things: the tiniest yields in a decade (resulting from poor flowering) and the outstanding style of its wines. You don’t however have to wait for the single-block wines to appreciate the benevolent mark of the vintage. Drawn from 20+-year-old vines, the estate Pinot Noir was handpicked on March 11th, mostly destemmed, and then given a cold soak before fermentation begins. After 21 days on skins, pressed to French barriques and puncheons (less than 10% new) for malolactic, then left on lees in oak for ten months.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0648/2575/3828/files/c975e2a5-b2d2-ed11-ab3d-024d026f405e_22021-750.png?v=1693021237
toolangi-pauls-lane-chardonnay-2021
Toolangi Vineyard Pauls Lane Chardonnay 2021

Established in 1995, Toolangi Vineyard is in the Dixons Creek subregion of the Yarra Valley, adjoining the Toolangi State Forest. This low-cropping vineyard is planted to the Gingin, Mendoza and I10V3 clones and sits on fine clay loam. Year after year, it produces wines with a distinctive personality and strong sense of place. The Paul’s Lane Chardonnay is the product of just 20 rows of the original 1995 plantings on the property: I1OV3 and Gingin clones in D block.

The fruit was handpicked on 27th February and pressed as whole bunches to barriques and puncheons (20% new) for fermentation. There was no malolactic conversion, and the wine matured without lees for 10 months. 2021 was a long, classic season, allowing for brilliant flavour definition. It’s a fairly dense yet racy Chardonnay with layers of ripe pear, yellow jube and nectarine fruit, nutty complexity and a clean, powdery close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0648/2575/3828/files/6e559355-428f-ee11-ac3d-02c0c1c8e708_24116-750.png?v=1701335097
