It’s been designed as a delicious, easy-drinking introduction to the range, and takes in a pan-regional expression of Rioja's three principle grape varieties. While the majority of entry-level wines from this region today are based on Tempranillo (a variety both easier and more profitable to grow), here Garnacha represents 40% of the blend. This Garnacha hails from the sandy, river stone terroir of El Agudo—a 60-year-old plot at Alfaro on Monte Yerga (in Rioja Oriental). The Tempranillo is drawn from a selection of mature vines in Ábalos (high county Rioja Alta), and there is also some Ábalos Graciano, adding freshness and finesse.

Puyabert fermented this wine in a combination of concrete and steel tank, then aged it for six months in concrete and 5,000-litre oak vats. Thanks to Bernard Plageoles' outspoken lobbying for this variety, it is now the most commonly planted of all of Gaillac's traditional red grape varieties and this wine shows you why. It comes from a parcel of 40-year-old goblet vines on the limestone and clay of Cahuzac-sur-Vère in the heart of the Gaillac country. It’s a magnificent, sweeping site, divided into a large number of sub-plots and nurtured meticulously (and organically) by Ben Cowley. Corofin’s fruit comes from the main slopes, planted at a density of 3,800 vines per hectare on clay-rich soils. 2015 was the first year that Mike Paterson worked exclusively with the vineyard’s 20-year-old Abel vines—otherwise known as the ‘Gumboot clone’ for the way it made its way to New Zealand. The Abel fruit is prized for its natural acidity, tannins and extract. Largely, for this reason, the Cowley delivers a deeper and darker expression of Pinot than Settlement. That said, all of Paterson’s 2017 Pinots capture a good measure of silky charm and floral lift and this wine is no different. Expect a bright, floral wine with plenty of jubey, red currant and wild strawberry fruit as well as a wonderfully cool, sappy freshness and plenty of fine tannins running the length of the palate. There’s also some subtle smoked meat and earthy complexity that might give a clue to the wine’s future development. The fruit for this bottling hails from a 0.25-hectare slither at the top of the vineyard’s east slope, a clay-rich parcel planted to a density of 4,600 vines per hectare. Picked first, Settlement is typically the most red-fruited and youthfully radiant of the Corofin trio although this ’17 also has plenty of stuffing. Managed organically (Bio Gro), it’s the most inland and southern site that Corofin source from. Therefore, it’s the most extreme with a high diurnal range. It’s often picked some ten days after Cowley. Another point of differentiation is the soil here—this parcel has plenty of gravel running through the clay. For those new to this wine, it hails from the Atlantic ventilated hills of Morocco’s Zenata region in the lee of the spectacular Middle Atlas Mountains. The relatively cool climate and altitude here–and the mix of red and black clay over a base of limestone and ancient ocean bed remnants–provide the right mix of conditions for scented, juicy, layered Syrah that Alain Graillot hopes will showcase the surprising potential of Morocco. The story has it that Alain was cycling in Morocco (hence the tandem bike and palm tree on the label) when he stopped off at Domaine des Ouled Thaleb, 40 km inland from the Atlantic Ocean. A conversation with the Domaine's then oenologist, Jacques Poulaine, and a close look at sites in Rommani and Benslimane convinced Graillot of the potential for producing highly elegant Syrah. The towns of Rommani and Benslimane lie between Casablanca on the Atlantic Ocean and the Middle Atlas mountains. As always it comes from a single vineyard near the village of Beaumont-Monteux, only a couple of kilometres from his father's vines. Here, in the most south-easterly part of the appellation, the soils are full of gravel and alluvial stones, low in clay and fast-draining—very similar to the Domaine Alain Graillot soils in Les Chênes Verts, just to the north. This soil type lends itself to a refined, aromatic Syrah with a pronounced savoury profile. Planted throughout the 1980s, the vines are now managed organically (certification is due next year). The fermentations are entirely natural and Graillot Jr. uses only a small whole-bunch component, usually in the realm of 20-30%. It’s therefore a wine that tends to ‘come around’ earlier than the 100% whole-bunch wines that carry the Alain Graillot name. The 2017 was fermented in concrete vats and then racked into one-, two- and three-year-old Burgundy barrels purchased from some of the top Estates in Burgundy. There is also a tiny component (less than 10%) of new barrels that are purchased from the Atelier Centre France, whose bespoke steam-bent barrels are now used at Guiberteau, Didier Dagueneau and François Chidaine.
