The Massolino family are the largest holders in Vigna Rionda with 3.5 hectares (two planted to Nebbiolo) of vines between 40 and 50 years old. The soil here is similar to the Parafada vineyard (limey/chalky marls), yet it is deeper again, with more chalk and a higher concentration of minerals and oxidised iron elements. The altitude is 330 metres above sea level, and the protection from northern winds and frost that the south/southwest aspect affords means that Vigna Rionda has a longer growing season than the other Crus.

All these factors combine to produce a terroir that generates wines with an optimum balance of perfume, finesse and structure rarely found elsewhere in Barolo. First bottled as a single cru in 1982, 2016 marks the 35th vintage of Massolino’s benchmark Barolo, Vigna Rionda, and even those who know this wine intimately will surely not have tasted a greater expression.

The sheer quality achieved this this year has led Massolino to introduce a new, all-black label, which henceforth will only be used for very greatest years of Vigna Rionda. There has also been a price rise on this special release of Massolino’s premier wine. All we can tell you is that the wine is wonderful and worth every penny.

Most will know that Vigna Rionda is arguably the most revered vineyard of Serralunga, and the source of some of the greatest, finest and most long-lived Barolo of the region. The Massolino family took ownership of their first parcel in 1956 and new parcels were purchased in 1967, 1985, and 1987, taking Massolino’s holding to the 3.5 hectares of vines (two are planted to Nebbiolo) they own today.

Some of the oldest terrain in Barolo, the soil here is similar to the Parafada vineyard, yet it is deeper and more complex again, with more limestone (up to 13%) and a higher concentration of minerals and oxidised iron elements. The altitude is 330 metres above sea level, and south/southwest aspect offers protection from northern winds and frost.

All these factors combine to produce a terroir that generates wines with an optimum balance of perfume, finesse and structure rarely found elsewhere in Barolo. These factors also produce wines with excellent acidity and tannins that require longer aging in both botti and bottle. This is why Massolino’s Vigna Rionda is always released with a minimum six years of age.

This is clearly a very special Vigna Rionda. It’s a rich, layered wine of enormous depth and power, yet also great finesse. It’s unique, perhaps a little like 2010 or 2004, but with more structural power. The sudden passing of the family patriarch, Angelo Rocca, in 2012 was obviously the catalyst. Angelo was already moving the estate back to a more classic style (having come full circle), and after his passing, his three daughters decided to produce a wine in his honour. Speaking with their grandfather Albino Rocca (Angelo’s father and founder of the estate), the Rocca sisters formulated the idea of making a wine in the way it had been done back in Albino’s day. The first release of the Angelo Barbaresco was such a success that it has inspired evolution across all the wines and two new wooden fermenters are now at the winery.

Angelo is a small blend of fruit from selected parcels across the estate. In the meantime, there is something charmingly ‘old school’ that the extended maceration has brought; something indescribably complex too. Vines here are around 45 years old and the fruit was first vinified as a separate bottling in 1990. Sitting on the sunnier, southwestern side of the ridge, these vines directly face the moderating influence of the Tanaro River, so the nights are much cooler than on the other side of the Cru. The clay and limestone soils are also sandier and lighter than in the rest of Ovello, giving the wines produced here far more finesse. Le Vigne includes fruit from four communes: Barolo (Vignane), Serralunga (Baudana), Novello (Merli) and Castiglione Falletto—in the renowned Villero cru. Sandrone has a long-term lease of this latter site (perhaps best-known for Bruno Giacosa’s Villero bottlings between 1978 and 1996). The wine was bottled unfiltered and then held for a further 18 months before release.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0648/2575/3828/files/4bffc448-7dc4-ed11-ab3d-0ac90280dbea_21872-1500.png?v=1686567825
luciano-sandrone-barolo-cannubi-boschis-2012-sibi-et-paucis
Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis 2012 Sibi et Paucis (1500ml)

The Sandrone family runs an outstanding museum program they call Sibi et Paucis—the name is Latin and translates roughly as: for the few and favoured. Each year, about 10 to 15% of the production of their Nebbiolo wines (the two Barolos and the Valmaggiore) is held back in the winery’s underground cellars under optimal aging conditions, to provide this producer’s long-term clients with aged-release wines that are closer to maturity.

It is Luciano Sandrone’s dream that one day all his wines will be released only when they are ready to drink. Currently, the Sibi et Paucis wines start being re-released six years after the vintage for the Valmaggiore, and for the Barolos, 10 years after the vintage. It is a wonderful initiative that we, of course, welcome. In his Barbaresco MGA, Masnaghetti writes that here, “the combination of soil, stature and exposure creates one of the greatest vineyards of the Langhe”. So, perhaps it won’t be a surprise that of the three Barbaresco parcels, Massolino chose to bottle its first single-vineyard wine from this site. As Franco Massolino explains, “From the very first moment this wine began to ferment, we knew we were dealing with a superb expression of Nebbiolo.” Of its two hectares in Albesani, Massolino used only 0.6 hectares of vines for this bottling. The vines were planted 50 years ago at 260 metres above sea level on soils of limestone, clay and marl with a southwest exposure.

The winemaking mirrors that of the Barbaresco. As reflected in the price, this is a big step up from the blend, a gorgeous, supple Barbaresco with alluring, lifted scents of red fruit, dried flower and sweet tobacco leading to a classically shaped palate of exciting depth, freshness and superb length.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0648/2575/3828/files/7d109bc2-464b-ed11-ab3d-024d026f405e_21201-750.png?v=1687504031
