It’s not only the elevation and proximity to the sea that makes this vineyard so special. A peculiar soil type predominates, les marnes bleues. The palate flows freely with lovely freshness allied to the silken textural depths and fine-grained tannins expected of this grower. It finishes lovely, long and scented and almost blurs the lines between Pinot and Syrah. Despite the high quality of the Turmberg and Klosterberg, this is clearly on another level. It’s not necessarily more intense but it’s certainly finer and more complete—a wine of obvious Grand Cru class. The varietal blend remains 60% Meunier, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir, with the fruit drawn from seven different parcels across the Côteaux Sud d'Épernay and Vallée de la Marne (namely Chavot, Mancy, Morangis, Le Breuil, Boursault, Moussy and Vaudancourt).
