It’s a hand-harvested, estate-grown, biodynamic, naturally fermented, low-dosage fizz that shows up many conventional Champagnes for both quality and value. Topping off an impressive package is the marvellous label designed by iconic French illustrator Michel Tolmer (of Mimi, Fifi and Glouglou fame).

Jo Landron is not a fan of using Muscadet’s Melon de Bourgogne for sparkling wine, preferring instead a blend of around 50 to 60% Folle Blanche (grown on sandy clay) with a balance of Pinot Noir (grown on gravelly soils). Vine age ranges from 18 to 30 years. The yields are typically between 50 and 60 hl/ha—far lower than the average yields in Champagne. The base wines ferment naturally and then go through a traditional second fermentation in bottle, where they remain for a minimum of 24 months. The dosage ranges from zero to a low 5 g/L (depending on the bottling). Moreover, the fruit for this cuvée is always from a single vintage (2020 in this case).

This list of attributes sounds like the approach of a top Champagne grower, not a humble Muscadet producer! It's no surprise, then, that the result is a wine of impressive depth and complexity. Fief is a term from the Middle Ages, meaning a piece of land once associated with (and probably owned by) the local Abbey or Duke. All three parcels are picked at the same time. As you might expect, Nicole Lamarche chooses to vinify a finer, prettier expression of the Clos—very Vosne in style. Vougeot seldom comes with a structure as lacy and as elegant as this. Nicole Lamarche works with very low yields here, which, alongside the Domaine’s delicate extraction, results in a supremely elegant expression of this terroir. This is another sensual, silky Echézeaux from the Lamarche cousins—fabulous perfume and detail along with loads of juicy raspberry and spices. The vineyard is enviably situated between La Tâche to the south and La Romanée-Conti, La Romanée and Romanée-Saint-Vivant to the north. In truth, it is simply a continuation of the La Tâche vineyard and can be thought of as a lighter-bodied (and somewhat lighter priced) version of La Tâche*. The site first came into Lamarche hands in 1933 and has been a monopole of the family ever since. After La Romanée, La Grande Rue is the smallest of the Vosne Grand Crus. Clive Coates MW writes: “La Grande Rue, in my view, is a more feminine wine than La Tâche. It is closer to Romanée-Saint-Vivant.” Meadows also tells us (in The Pearl of the Côte) that the wine’s ageing potential most closely mirrors that of Romanée-Saint-Vivant.

As always, comparisons are problematic—La Grande Rue clearly has its own personality and it is clearly a site of great class. When you taste this wine next to the same producer’s Echézeaux and Clos de Vougeot (which are themselves superb examples of their respective Grand Cru vineyards), the sheer class and depth of La Grande Rue is self-evident. For those new to this wine, it hails from the Atlantic ventilated hills of Morocco’s Zenata region in the lee of the spectacular Middle Atlas Mountains. The relatively cool climate and altitude here–and the mix of red and black clay over a base of limestone and ancient ocean bed remnants–provide the right mix of conditions for scented, juicy, layered Syrah that Alain Graillot hopes will showcase the surprising potential of Morocco. The story has it that Alain was cycling in Morocco (hence the tandem bike and palm tree on the label) when he stopped off at Domaine des Ouled Thaleb, 40 km inland from the Atlantic Ocean. A conversation with the Domaine's then oenologist, Jacques Poulaine, and a close look at sites in Rommani and Benslimane convinced Graillot of the potential for producing highly elegant Syrah. The towns of Rommani and Benslimane lie between Casablanca on the Atlantic Ocean and the Middle Atlas mountains. As such, there is a relatively cool climate thanks to the ocean breezes and an altitude of about 500 metres.

The Syrah vines are 10-40-years-old (average 25 years). Overseen by Stéphane Mariot, the vineyard work is meticulous, with goblet pruning, hand-weeding and hand-ploughing, no herbicide or fungicide treatments are used. The grapes were 100% destemmed and fermented in closed concrete vats. Daily pump-overs were done and maceration was completed in ten days. The wine was aged for 15 months, first in tanks, and then finished in large oak casks imported from Burgundy (from François Frères).

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0648/2575/3828/files/e3118663-6399-ee11-ac3e-02c0c1c8e708_16695-750.png?v=1702447341
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0648/2575/3828/products/d6e565bf-405b-e911-aa0e-d3cffc5c9002_16708-1500.jpg?v=1660773592
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0648/2575/3828/products/78f3c015-4e5b-e911-aa0e-d3cffc5c9002_16711-750.jpg?v=1660773599
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0648/2575/3828/products/483a241d-225c-e911-aa0e-f46a36e9d148_16717-1500.jpg?v=1660773615
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0648/2575/3828/products/cf2bb04a-225c-e911-aa0e-d3cffc5c9002_16717-750.jpg?v=1660773613
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0648/2575/3828/products/ba15ab37-e45c-e911-aa0e-f46a36e9d148_16718-750.jpg?v=1660773617
mas-de-libian-vin-de-france-vin-de-petanque-2018
Mas de Libian Vin de France Vin de Pétanque 2018

Biodynamic rouge.
