The Clare Valley is a pleasant 2-hour climb out to the north of Adelaide and around one hour northwest of the Barossa. The topography of the region is that of one larger central valley with a series of smaller valleys fanning to each side in a leaf-like pattern. It is a region with terrific history and strongly-developed wine styles driven by terroir and tradition, backed by patches of historically important old vines. Powerful and flavoursome Riesling and Shiraz are the most recognised wine styles, both with a proven ability to age. Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Mataro also perform well.
