Ruppertsberg is the southernmost commune of the Pfalz. From its relatively shallow sandstone and loam soils, it is a region noted for the raciness of its dry Rieslings and also offers some superb micro climates for sweeter styles. Sheltered by sandstone walls to the South, West and North, the Reiterpfad vineyard is one site that is favoured for the production of sweet wines (it is worth noting that the vineyard is also Grosses Gewächs-designated for its dry wine). The protection offered by the walls has a two-fold influence on the wine. They protect the vineyard from late frosts and cold extremes while also providing shade in the summer, thus ensuring steady ripeness while also preserving freshness in the wines. If the perfect attributes of Auslese are clarity, vineyard resonance and concentration then this 2010 delivers on all counts.
It exhibits highly concentrated fruit aromas while it's statuesque shape almost vibrates on the tongue. Specifically, this 2010 Reiterpfad Auslese smells of intense, peach preserve spiked with orange and a hint of white flowers as well as an exotic, earthy/smoky mineral note. The palate is bursting at the seams with citric brightness, energetic sweetness and a refined, bracing structure.
There is around 120g/l of residual sugar although we should note that the wines taste drier than the norm in 2010, a feature afforded by the vintage's electrically-charged acidity. Historically we have shipped very little sweet wine from Von Buhl but we simply could not resist this wonderful wine. It will work beautifully with a wide range of foods including: soft cheeses (especially goats and sheep milk cheeses), game bird, lightly spiced dishes and fruit based desserts.
