Robert Weil

Kiedrich - Rheingau

Our notes:

The day we tasted the wines of Robert Weil 2004s was a happy day in the history of this business. Here we were again being gob smacked by a range of stunning wines, from an acknowledged master and yet no-one was bringing the wines in to Australia. How could we refuse? With JJ Prum (Mosel) and Muller Catoir (Pfalz) in our portfolio, this now gives us three of Germany's greatest producers from the three top Riesling regions. The Rheingau is of-course one of the great Riesling areas of the world. In fact it could be called the Cote d'Or of Riesling. Like the latter, the Rheingau is practically one long hillside, a collection of south facing, sun trapping vineyards that slope down to the Rhine and Main rivers along their 30 km, east-west journey. The Taunus Mountains shields the area from the bitter north and east winds, giving the Rheingau its famous warm (by German standards) and dry climate. It is these favorable conditions, along with the slate rich soils of the region and the botrytis inducing mists of its two rivers that makes the Rheingau such a unique place to produce great Riesling. And produce it does.

The Robert Weil estate has been at the top of Rheingau tree for quite some time. In the August 1993 issue of "Alles über Wein" [Germany's leading wine publication] the 1992 Weil wines were placed first amongst all Rheingau estates. The "Gault Millau Wine Guide" rates the estate as one of the top five in all of Germany, and voted Wilhelm Weil as the 1997 wine maker of the year. Robert Weil has since reached cult status and is respected on both sides of the Atlantic as a maker of superlative Riesling. David Schildknecht has just rated Weil's Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Kiedrich 2004 at 99 points and Jancis Robinson rated the same wine 19.5/20. We only had 12 bottles to offer all of Australia. Despite the customary high prices of TBA Rieslings, a result of high production costs and the rarity of the style [one barrel generally supplies the entire world], this wine still sells out instantly at the winery. With 65 hectares (160 acres) under vine in the Rheingau, Robert Weil's sites include the best sections of the great Kiedricher Gräfenberg (Gräfenberg translates as "Hill of the Counts"), Wasseros and Sandgrub.

What the critics are saying:

Stephen Brook, The Wines of Germany (Mitchell Beazley)
"This is now the superstar estate of the Rheingau."

David Schildknecht [The Wine Advocate] on the Kiedrich Grafenberg Riesling Spatlese 2004
"...shame on any Riesling lovers who do not make the effort to taste it for themselves!"
