Müller-Catoir

Pflaz

Our notes:

Lying at the foot of the Haardt hills with views across the Rhine plains, Muller-Catoir can trace its history back to 1744. Nine generations have tended the 20 hectares of primarily riesling vines now run by Jakob Heinrich Catoir and his son Phillip. Top appellations include Haardter Bürgergarten, Herzog, Gimmeldinger Mandelgarten and Mussbacher Eselshaut. There have been some recent changes with Martin Franzen from Baden Baden's Nägelsförst estate taking over winemaking duties and so we'll no doubt see even further refinements to Muller-Catoir's dizzying array of wines. Franzen favours extended lees-contact, ultra-reductive vinification and ultra-dry wines. Even the so called 'modern-Trocken' wines (9g.l. residual sugar) are not his style.

What the critics are saying:

Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide, 6th edition
"This (Pfalz), is the home of the producer Müller-Catoir, who is making some of the most riveting wines of Germany."

Stuart Piggott, Wine Atlas of Germany
"Showered with praise during the last decade, this estate is now widely recognised as one of the country's best. Few white wines are made that can match the intensity or expressiveness achieved by Hans Günter Schwartz with an astonishing variety of grapes. Each wine is like an essence of its grapes yet, however dense and powerful, Müller-Catoir wines possess an excellent harmony. Schwarz's extraordinary majestically rich dry Weissburgunders and Grauburgunders have no hint of heaviness in spite of their 14 or 15 degrees of alcohol. Similarly sensational are the estate's wines from the riesling crosses scheurebe and rieslaner. The former yields opulent dry wines that have seen off the toughest international competition in 'blind' tastings, the latter gives some of the most explosively rich dessert wines in Germany. The dry muskateller and gewürztraminer, still relatively unknown, are marvellously elegant expressions of their grapes.

"Since the '89 vintage Müller-Catoir has made dramatic improvements to its dry and sweet rieslings and these are now in the same class as the estate's other wines. Any sweetness in the Riesling Halbtrocken and dessert wines is entirely natural and always beautifully integrated with the racy acidity, a prominent feature of all the estate's wines. In spite of increasingly intense competition in this dynamic wine region this is still one of the premier wine estates along the length of the Rhine."

"I clearly remember the first time I tasted a wine from this outstandingly innovative Pfalz estate. It was back in the 1980s when the notion of a full-bodied dry(ish) German wine labelled Spätlese Trocken seemed a revelation. Müller-Catoir have gone on to win followers all over the world, especially in the US where the exotically upfront, almost overwhelming fruit in the wines is particularly appreciated. If Germany has a Californian Chardonnay style (and I'm talking Turley rather than Turning Leaf here), then perhaps the wines of Muller-Catoir are it."

eRobertParker.com
"Muller-Catoir is Germany's most fashionable winemaker - Muller-Catoir's aromatic wines are undoubtedly super-ripe and multi-dimensional, as well as exceptionally complex. Most importantly, they are delicious!

"For the extraordinary diversity of great wines that are produced, Muller-Catoir is Germany's greatest estate."

"This is still one of the premier wine estates along the length of the Rhine."

Remarkable for an "entry level" wine; if this was any other producer's best wine, you'd be stoked! Cropped at an incredibly low 35hl/ha it's bright and almost impossibly pure. This is a lush and... read more

Muller Catoir Haardt Riesling Kabinett Trocken 2010
At this stage the Haardt village wine is firmer and more coiled than the bottling above. It tastes incisive, ethereal, tangy, a 'Cor, Blimey' kind of Riesling with oodles of preserved lemon, juby... read more

Muller Catoir Haardt Riesling Kabinett Trocken 2009
Dry. A muscular and powerful wine that belies its kabinett label. Packed with yellow fruit and spice. Very complete and mineral with a long, firm finish. Again, great potential here.
