Mas De Libian Bout D'Zan 2010

Mas De Libian Bout D'Zan 2010

This comes from 35 year-old biodynamic vines rooted in a mix of terroirs - the galets roules (rolled alluvial stones), a sand and clay parcel on top of the terrace and from lower lying limestone parcels of soil. The 2010 blend is 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, and one-third of this blend is aged for roughly seven months in old foudre, while the remainder is raised in cement vats. Bout d'Zan refers to a traditional French liquorice sweet but it was also to the friendly nickname of Hélène's father in his childhood, referring to his small size and tanned skin. There are plenty of concentrated, sweet, juicy, black fruits here on both the nose and palate. Right now it is young, primary and deeply concentrated yet retains the mouth-watering freshness typical of the Estate's wines. Thibon appears very much at home with Grenache, achieving great body and generosity without any over-extraction or over-ripeness. Mature Syrah - up 10% from the 2009 blend - adds spice, zippy blueberry and anise notes. This is an ultra-pure bright and intense wine packed with plenty of sunshine and yet also an elegant touch of shade. Outstanding value that over-delivers on every level.
