Joh Jos Prüm is arguably the most celebrated riesling producer in the world. Founded in 1911 by Johann Josef Prüm, whose family have called the village of Wehlen home since 1156, the 33.5 hectare estate, which encompasses the best parts of the top middle-Mosel sites, has been run by Dr Manfred Prum since 1969.

The vineyards, which are devoted solely to riesling, are planted on steeply-sloping Devon schist soils. Super sites include Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Domprobst, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube and Bernkasteler Bratenhöfchen.

Harvesting is late and often goes through to the end of November, while meticulous care is taken in the winery. The wines, characterised by their purity of fruit as well as by their distinctive minerally and slaty character, are also prized for their longevity.

"Few estates in the world can claim to have maintained the highest quality standards uninterrupted for half a century and more. Joh Jos Prüm, the most famous of the many Mosel wine estates bearing the Prüm name, is one estate that can. Since the early 20's its wines have been among Germany's best, Rieslings with the Mosel's vivacious aroma and racy elegance in its highest form.

Dr Manfred Prüm has directed Joh Jos Prüm since 1969, working cautiously to refine the winemaking methods and wine style developed by his father, Sebastian Prüm. Joh Jos Prüm wines have long been distinct from other Mosel rieslings and as such are sometimes the subject of heated debate. They develop unusually slowly, often showing a slightly yeasty character when young, which can be confusing for those unfamiliar with the wines. However this dissipates with age as the fruit, floral and mineral characters unfold. The estate's most seductively rich and filigree wines usually come from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, directly across the river from the Art Nouveau estate house on the river bank in Wehlen. In the right vintage the firm, slightly less fine wines from the Gracher Himmelreich can almost match these. The peach-like fruit and supple acidity of the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr wines makes them well suited to being vinified dry."

With the rise of so many excellent winemakers in the region, one might have supposed that JJ Prum, with its profound conservatism, might have been overtaken and left behind. Not a bit of it. The Estate remains where it has been for decades: at the summit."
