Huet Clos Du Bourg Moelleux 1er Trie Vouvray 2009

#3 in Wine Spectators Top 100 Wines of 2011.

We have already alluded to the special qualities of this vineyard in the notes above, and given the reviews below there can be very little to add other than to distill them into one sentence. For fans of this style - a salivating confluence of Chenin's tautness and minerality flawlessly balanced by incredible, perfectly balanced lushness - this wine is as close to heaven in a glass as one can get.
This seems rather closed on the nose today, although with a little air it shows a very elegant and stylish layer of honeyed flower petals and light golden fruit. The palate is where it really has impact, a greater substance immediately apparent here, the mellifluous sweetness mixed with a tangible grip alongside a rather subtle acid layer. There is great promise of complexity here though, a wonderful balance unfolds as the acidity shows more in the midpalate, and there is such purity! This is really very, very lovely." 19+/20, The Wine Doctor.com (January 2011)
"The nearly 15-acre Clos du Bourg vineyard features a mix of clay, silt and pebbles over limestone subsoils, producing this Loire Valley domaine's richest expression of Chenin Blanc. If weather permits, as it did in 2009, beneficial Botrytis cinerea (noble rot) dehydrates the late-ripening grapes, whose fresh acidity counterbalances the resulting sweet wine's concentrated fruit and spice notes. This Première Trie represents Huët winemaker Noël Pinguet's top selection of hand-harvested grapes. This is gorgeous, with notes of ginger, orange, clementine, white peach and green fig all bouncing off one another, but working harmoniously through the richly detailed finish. A lingering green tea note hangs on for added length as this puts on weight with air. Drink now through 2025." 96 points. Number 3, Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines, 2011.
