A previous 'Tre Bicchieri' finalist, this is one of Girlan's single vineyard wines. Often relegated to the lower, richer soils in Alsace where it produces richer, more full bodied expressions, Pinot Bianco can make an altogether different, more subtle and refreshing wine when the vineyard is clinging to the side of a mountain, 550 meters above sea level, as is the case here. Nonetheless, the high altitude Plattenriegl vineyard allows for a longer ripening period which, combined with the old vines, gravel-limestone soils and partial vinification in oak, makes for a far more fleshy and complex wine than what you would typically get from this variety in Italy. The wine is first fermented in tank before ageing in large barrels (25%) and large vats (75%) while 40% of the wine goes through malo. The Plattenriegl 2010 is a very intense wine, with pulpy yellow fruits, liquorice root and a crushed stone-like, mineral edge. It has a lovely texture and fine acidity on the long, persistent finish. Refined, precise and highly recommended.
