Benchmark Producer of Mencía
Bierzo is today one of the most fashionable wine regions in Spain. The grape variety here is Mencia, a vine we are sure to hear a great deal more about in the years to come. The terrain of Bierzo is steep, windy, high altitude and rocky. Just the sort of place to make the vines work very hard and keep the yields ridiculously low. The best of these wines have the fleshy texture of a rich Hermitage (with a nod towards Burgundy) and all the complexity you could wish for. In short, the best Bierzo are delicious, fleshy reds with a great deal of elegance. Dominio de Tares was formed in 2000 by an enthusiastic group of locals including Mario Rico and Amancio Fernández, with the objective being a quality resurgence following years of neglect in the area. Given Bierzo's cool, mineral terroir and the old Mencía vines, quality at the highest level was an immediate possibility. Amancio, one of Spain's brightest young oenologists, brought intimate knowledge of local viticulture to bear, working from the start with the area's most serious growers in order to obtain the very best fruit. The resulting wines are stunning, textured, flavour rich reds ? some of the finest being produced in the area. If you like Spanish reds you really must try some.
