This is Klein's old vine blend of Grenache (60%) and Syrah (40%). Rather than just adding tannic weight and high levels of extraction (as many 'old vine' Rhône blends seem to do), this is a finely balanced wine with softness, poise and finesse. There's plenty of colour and concentration from perfectly ripe fruit, with aromas of dark berries, hazelnut, lightly smoked meats and spice. The mouthfeel is saturated with intense red cherry fruit and peppery spices, yet with a crunchy, electric finish, the overall impression is of a very elegant and vibrant example of the CDR genre. Ripe, velveteen tannins only add to this impression. A very exciting and effortlessly classy Côtes du Rhône.
