Our notes:

High in the mountains overlooking the Mediterranean's Bay of La Ciotat, between Marseilles and Toulon, you'll find the idyllic Château de Pibarnon. At 300 metres above sea level, the vines, grown in a stunning amphitheatre-style setting, are the highest in the Bandol appellation, famous for its signature grape mourvèdre and the distinctive muscular wine it produces. At Château de Pibarnon, 26.5 hectares of vines, from a total of 48 hectares, are dedicated to red wine production (90% mourvèdre,10% grenache), and have an average age of 35 years. The clay and limestone soil from the Triassic era (200-hundred million years ago) is unique to Pibarnon and ideal for growing mourvèdre, while the high altitude means there is no risk of fog and its friend rot.

Château de Pibarnon has broken ranks in Bandol and produces wines of elegance, concentration, complexity and length. In the winery destemming helps control mourvèdre's vicious tannins, wines are plunged each day to aid concentration and longevity, and are racked into large old oak foudres for 18 months before blending and bottling.
