** Producteur de trés grands vins
(one of only 163 producers of 'very great wines' in France) LE CLASSEMENT 2005, Bettane & Desseauve
Our notes:
Chandon de Briailles is an important 13-hectare domaine with some of the best holdings in the heart of the Côte de Beaune: grand cru Corton (and very recently, some Corton Charlemagne), Aloxe Corton premier cru, some highly impressive Pernand-Vergelesses premier cru and Savigny premier cru. The estate, owned by Count and Countess Aymard-Claude de Nicolaÿ, has been in family since 1834, with cellars dating back to the 13th century. Today, Madame Nicolaÿ and her daughter Claude are at the helm, together with cellar and vineyard manager Jean-Claude (Kojak) Bouveret. The family has practised organic viticulture since the late '80s and now a third of the vineyards are biodynamic.
The key to understanding Chandon de Briailles wines is to know that the Nicolaÿs are not into making luscious, seductively hedonistic blockbusters. What they seek is elegance, structure and style. The wines age very well and reward patience, but if you want to drink young from this domaine, choose the Savigny aux Fourneaux or the Pernand Les Vergelesses.
What the critics are saying:
Clive Coates, Côte d'Or "Progress has been impressive here over the last decade, and this is now a prime source for Ile de Vergelesses and a clutch of Cortons."
Le Classement 2005, Bettane & Desseauve "The wines of this prestigious domaine are has to advise above all with the informed amateurs, those which are more sensitive to the refinement of texture and the aromas that the power of the body has."
