For only the second time, we are able to offer the delicious Primeur wines of one of the greats of Beaujolais; Pierre-Marie Chermette. In one way this offer is all about superficial pleasure, in another, it’s quite significant. For years Beaujolais Nouveau in Australia has been simple, bubble gummy stuff dropped on us by large negociant producers. Now one of the finest artisanal producers of Beaujolais is showing how delicious early bottled Beaujolais can be and why it became popular in the first place. To this end, Pierre-Marie Chermette is offering us two “Primeur” releases with some major differences from traditional Nouveau. Here we have handpicked, low sulphur, non-chaptilised, mature and old vine Gamay from one of the region’s great names. It’s pretty clear why the Chermettes do not want to call these wines Nouveau but that’s what they technically are.
